Raw Feeding
Feeding Cats the Natural way - Raw Diet for cats and kittens (Week 4)
Week 5 - August 10, 2008

Halfway through Week 5 and we've had an interesting few days to say the least!! We do have some very good news though and that is the fact that every cat in our home is now on a raw meat/bone diet and I am convinced that removing all the biscuits was the right choice to make. Cacao was the absolute last person to come around but now, fortunately, she is tucking into the raw meals as well.

We did have a slight issue on Friday 8th, because on the 7th, I was away all day and didn't get back home until 11:45pm. The problem with this is that because we don't feed any frozen meat and it is all fresh, it is purchased daily and as I had been away for the day, I hadn't been to Tesco to do the normal daily shopping so I had to stop off at our local Tesco on the way home. However I was totally exhausted and it had been such a very long and tiring day, so rather than spend 20 minutes in Tesco looking for whatever fresh meat and bones I would feed, I made the rather bad decision of just popping into the pet food aisle and grabbed some wet pouches. So of course this meant that breakfast for the cats in the morning would be commercial foods. As for the effects of this............................

The following morning, I gave the pouches for breakfast and was not at all surprised to see some of the cats start eating as if there were no tomorrow, whereas the earliest raw converts looked at the pouches, looked at me with, I swear, looks of horror in their eyes. I did explain to them that it's only one meal and that they would just have to eat it. Eventually, the plates were all licked clean and by late afternoon, some of the cats were becoming quite tetchy with each other and a few of them were visiting the litter tray far more than they should have been. Let's just say that litter tray duties throughout the day were not particularly pleasant! Of course Parsley then had his "vomiting after eating" routine, something which hasn't happened since he converted to raw feeding <sigh>. When they were given their normal raw meal for dinner that evening I was pleased to see that the newest converts still ate it willingly and I wasn't sure that they would having had a commercial breakfast.

We have now worked out the daily meat/bone requirement for the cats, going off each cats' weight and the fact that they should be eating the equivalent of 2-3% of their own body weight. In which case, we should be feeding approximately 2.1 kilograms of meat/bones per day. And are we??????? Actually, having weighed the meats at each meal last night and this morning, it would seem that I am offering more than the daily requirement but it's no surprise there.

I have also managed to solve the chicken wing problem at last. My main concern was that while the cats were eating the meat off the bone, only a very small minority were actually eating the bones, so a couple of days ago I started chopping each chicken wing into 3 manageable parts and that made all the difference in the world. Since doing this, there are now very few bones left over after each meal and this is a huge relief because bone intake is an important part of the raw feeding diet.

I have attached a few more "feeding photos" that were taken a few days ago during one of the evening meals. You will however, only see some of the cats because of an evening, we do separate the cat family and some people go in the kitten room, whilst the "blue boys" as I call them, sleep with Ashanti.
